The Merry Cemetery
Maramures most famous tourist attraction! In 1935 a wood sculpture, Ioan
Patras, started carving oak crosses for the cemetery. He painted each cross blue, included
a scene from their lives (or death!) and a humorous poem (reminiscent of Boot Hill) on
each.
There are scenes of a woman working at her loom (in the photograph above),
a barber cutting hair, a woman who operated a distillery, shepherds tending their sheep,
etc. An alcoholic shown drinking from a bottle and others who lived a less than ideal life
have it displayed for all to see. There are even pictures of automobile accidents
including a little girl, aged three.
Petras died in 1977. The work is carried on by Turda Toader and Vasile
Stan. |
